NST is Non-Standard Training. This is an ACGME requirement for any Non-Accredited Program with a J-1 Visa Trainee.

ACGME NST Requirements

  • Must have a PD from among the faculty mostly closely related ACGME program
    • Oversees NST trainee supervision, education, and assessment at all participating sites
    • PD must be approved by GMEC
  • Trainees are limited to participating sites from the most closely related ACGME program
    • Trainees must be approved by GMEC
  • Appointments – NST programs must define education/training for entry into program and that trainees meet these requirements
  • Curriculum – NST programs must have curriculum with goals, trainee responsibilities, supervision, and educational experiences and their descriptions
  • Assessment
    • 0-3 months into training program – trainee must be assessed by milestones of the closest ACGME program
    • Until this is done, a supervising faculty member must be physically present to supervise NST trainee
    • Semi-annual and Summative evaluations are required
    • Mechanism for trainee feedback is required
  • Clinical hours
    • No more than 80 hours per week averaged over 4-week period
  • One day in 7 free of duties averaged over a 4-week period
