Work-related travel for house staff

The BJH/SLCH/WU Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium recognizes that certain work-related travel for house staff is needed to support their education as part of their training requirements. Therefore, the following work-related travel is permitted:

  • Attendance at a conference in the United States if the resident/fellow is presenting a talk, poster or abstract at the meeting. No international travel* for conferences or elective experiences is permitted at this time. Please strongly consider virtual conference attendance if this is an option.
  • Electives in the United States, (provided that the elective rotation has been approved by the program director and the Office of Graduate Medical Education per the usual approval process. No international electives* are permitted at this time.
  • Travel for purposes of fellowship or job interviews is considered to be personal travel and is not covered by this guidance document. Personal travel is at the discretion of each individual.

*Note: For purposes of this document, “International” is considered any location outside of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Please remember that even outside of pandemic times, international travel requires approval by the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and any requests for international travel should be sent to the designated institutional officer (DIO), Tia Drake.

The GME Consortium reserves the right to update this guidance as needed as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve. Please contact the Office of Graduate Medical Education with any questions or concerns.
